Adam Smith

I'd always had this idea of Adam Smith as a bad guy in economics. However, the more I learn, the more I think I'm actually in-line with Smith.

One thing I'd always picked up from the cultural ether is the idea that Smith was "uncaring"... he reduced things to a mechanical, inhuman view of markets. However, I now learn that in addition to "The Wealth of Nations", Smith also wrote "The Theory of Moral Sentiment" in which he expands his idea of "self interest" to be motivated by love and compassion and all the human virtues that get short shrift in the traditional economic view. (This is all based on listening to an EconTalk podcast, so take it with a grain of salt; I have not yet read the books).
