Americans are About Paying Down Credit Cards

The other point about what can be detected out there; I talked to Kevin McCarthy, who’s one of these very aggressive young Republicans. [...] He said, look, there’s a behavioral disconnect that voters see. Their personal behavior is about saving and paying down credit card debt and holding on. What they see Washington doing is running up the credit card through debts and spending or enlarging the federal debt and they feel uncomfortable and at times angry about that behavioral difference. How they’re living their lives and how they perceive Washington living its life on the country’s credit card.

Major Garret, Washington Week 2010-10-29

I'm not sure who I'm calling out as Garret is giving a second quote that's actually the dumb bit, but shame on Garret for repeating something so silly without comment. Look, it may be true that that's how some American's feel, but those Americans are stupid. It's fine to think that Washington is spending too much, but painting American's as penny pincher's is simple disingenuous.

The root of the financial troubles wasn't Washington spending, it was private debt. The government deficit is a concern, but between maxing out credit cards and leveraging all the equity out of homes they couldn't afford to begin with, the American people are certainly no less foolish when it comes to their own finances. To say otherwise would be simply lying for the sake of pandering... Gott in Himmel! Politicians and their commentators are just so vapid.
