Boondock Saints

This had all the marks of a movie I should at least like, but I ended up hating it... and I never hate movies. DVD and Blu-Ray.

Summary

It's not the only thing wrong with the movie, but if I had to sum it up, Boondock Saints just tries way too hard at way to many things. It tries to be snappy and cool like a Guy Ritchie flick, exude the gritty reality of Trainspotting mixed with Constantine's comic book aesthetic and religious overtones. What you get is just dumb mush. That's not something I ever say about action movies; I try to judge movies in their own context and action movies aren't meant to be smart.

Don't get me wrong, there are things you could like about this movie. There were times when I thought, "This isn't so bad." But by the end of the movie it was all like, "WTF? That was idiotic." There's nothing less cool than trying to be cool in that palpable, needy way that this movie very much exhibits. It's not just that it tries to hard--plenty of movies do that--but it can't even decide what direction to go in.

Notes and Details

Spoilers.

After 'announcing themselves to the world' when they execute the mafia boss in open court, there follows this terribly trite series of interviews with "the common folk" debating whether the "Boondock Saints" are good or not. It's not even a setup for Boondock Saints II (ugh), it reads like it's trying to set up a franchise.

WTF was the pitch for this movie like? "It's not only a gritty-underdog-comic-book-Guy-Ritchie-esque action story with frequent comedic interludes involving the tough-as-nails and gay-as-a-rainbow FBI agent... it really makes you think!"
