Spreadsheets are awesome for doing data analysis. I use them primarily for financial analysis and modeling. Specifically, OpenOffice's oocalc. It's every bit as good as Excel, and it's free. It's mostly Excel compatible, though there are differences in some of the more advanced stuff. If you look on the oocalc function references (online, just search for the function and 'oocalc') they'll bring up the gotchas for Excel users.
