Darjeeling Limited

Good movie, but not my favorite Wes Anderson movie--though my ranking is very different from the critical consensus, so take that with a grain of salt. DVD.

Summary

Three brothers ride the Darjeeling Limited train... not so much "in search of purpose" as without purpose and taking in whatever comes along. The critics seem pretty united that this is a much better and more mature film than Anderson's previous films (at least as far as Life Aquatic and The Royal Tannenbaums), which may be so. My focus--especially in the movies of the Anderson aesthetic--is so much more on the characters than the "maturity of the film", and the problem with this movie is that the characters are just so weak.

Two of the brother's have no motivation whatsoever. They're just go along with whatever comes up. The third, who organizes the trip, has some internal drive, but is easily overrun when things don't just go his way. There's nothing wrong with any of this mind you, it just makes the movie so much less interesting in my view. I don't really care what happens to the characters because they themselves don't seem to care much.
