So, I guess the Republicans "swept" the house, but does it really matter all that much? I mean, the Dems still have the Senate and the Presidency, which are more important. I think the best analysis I've heard was "get ready for 2 years of world class political posturing because nothing is going to happen." Hardly anything happened when the Republicans were just the opposition party. Now that they're in power, internally divided, and Mitch McConnell coming right out and saying that the Republicans first priority is to focus on the 2012 presidential election... well, don't expect a lot of new policy.

My God, we're in for a shit storm... and it has very little to do with the Republicans. We've somehow created a system that does nothing the people want or need. The number one priority in every state in 2011 as far as politicians are concerned is going to be redistricting. No one things our current system is a good idea, everyone knows it's unfair and wastes a lot of time and resources, but there's not anyone out there trying to change it.[notes 1]

Every quote I've heard from a politician in the run-up and aftermath of the election is like they're living on some other planet. It's a bunch of one sided, ludicrous narratives that cast banal political bickering as battles between good and evil while reducing all policy discussion to fictional and incompatible dichotomies.

Whatever. My one hope is that Sara Palin declares' her candidacy for President. She's hilarious.

Argh... am I really reduced to thinking of politics as a bad reality TV show, with my only hope that it features ever more ludicrous characters to keep me entertained?

Notes

  1. The opposition party always makes noise, but it's never real. They never do anything when they're not the opposition party.
