Summary

You probably won't like this movie, but I thought it was great. It's hard to say why this is without giving away something essential about the film, so I have to leave it at that for the summary.

I can say this: don't watch this movie when you're in a bad mood or feeling vulnerable.

Details and Notes

Spoiler ahead.

The Usual Suspects meets Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels but darker than both. Especially because the dark bits are so back weighted you don't really see it coming. I thought it was a tremendously impressive--if also disturbing--hidden fist attack on the viewer. On the other hand, I'm pretty sure it's precisely this attack which leads most watchers to pan the film.

In fact, it is in this film that I find the largest gap between myself and the critics at large (via rottentomatoes.com). Many of the bad reviews are along the lines of so-so comedy which turns into something else, and there's the problem: for me that's a plus.

This film does betray the viewer in some ways. To appreciate the movie, you have to be open to that. Don't get me wrong: it is unfair. If I'd watched this movie emneeding/em a comedy to lift my spirits, I would have been pissed. But this is a problem what the summary blurbs say about the film, not the film itself.

The fact is that it's neither a so-so comedy nor a trick ending flick nor a heist film. I don't know if it's genre blending or genre defying, but it's something.
