The number one challenge to good estimation is simply information. With estimates, you're talking about stuff you'll be doing in the future, which is by definition unknown.

a developer is like "a guy that fixes stuff"--the domain is to huge. You can and do fix a TV and a car and canoe and a toaster and a tractor, but since you do all that, you don't do any one enough to get a good feel for estimates.
