Fallacies of Distributed Computing
From Zanecorpwiki
Simple stuff, but vital to understand with any distributed project:
- The network is reliable.
- Latency is zero.
- Bandwidth is infinite.
- The network is secure.
- Topology doesn't change.
- There is one administrator.
- Transport cost is zero.
- The network is homogeneous.
The first four, which were defined by Bill Joy and Tom Lyon as The Four Fallacies of Network Computing are in my opinion the most important. The wikipedia article lists a ninth fallacy, but I it seems like a protocol/device level issue to me, which isn't what we're talking about here.
