Summary

The copyright says 1993 but the style screams 1980 and the movie is a bit schlocky at times, but overall fun. It takes its time with the setup, so have some popcorn ready or work on balancing your checkbook for the first half. This isn't a bad thing; I wish more movies would take their time. In this instance, the first part gets a little tired largely because Cruise--who plays the main character--seems a bit stiff until the action picks up in the second half.

The only thing that's out and out bad about this movie is the overwhelming piano music that serves as the score. I Is it some kind of attempt to give a bluesy southern vibe?

Details and Notes

All the characters are pretty one sided, but well acted with a strong cast. Cruise, who does well when the action gets intense in the second half, is a bit stiff in the first half and the denouement.

This is clearly a story driven film. Not surprising since it's based on a Grisham novel. There's enough going on to hold interest without getting overly complex. There are a couple of ah-hah moments, and places where the characters get lucky, but I did appreciated the fact that the plot was solid and didn't require a major suspension of disbelief.

But oh man, is the soundtrack terrible. I have to admit, it fits the movie, but that's the only good thing you can say about it. The main problem is that it's just so jarring. From silence, sharp piano riffs.
