A so-so heist movie which tries too hard at being something it's not. DVD.

Summary

It tries to be a "heist movie with a message". Unfortunately, both the message and the heists are way to watered down for either to be very interesting. There's a strong cast, and I love the retro setting, and the message (diamond industry bad) wouldn't have been a problem if they hadn't been so sentimental about it. Not that I have a problem with sentimentality, but here it's just so superficial... like everything else about the movie.

Not terrible, but nothing to go out of your way for.

Big cop out ending, though. After detailing the heist (aka, the movie), the main character lady says, "My real story begins here." Bullshit. There's only 5 minutes left. What begins here is some attempt to make the movie something more than it is. Oh, you gave the money away to charity? Great... but that's not any part of this story because you've spent the entire story on something else. Very amateurish.

He didn't do it for the money, diamonds are bad, she became this big philanthropist... it's like the last 10 minutes tries to make out like these things are what the movie was about all along. But it wasn't it was about the heist.

And the main problem with the movie is the heist is so friggin simple. I mean... there really wasn't a mystery. I had it figured out and I was only half paying attention while the movie was on. Besides, I question the basic premise. Sure, he's got a way to get them out, but the guy would have had to make dozens of trip to the vault, and never be noticed. All in all, at least half an hour per-trip and across the cameras just as many times. A good heist can be daring, but in the end has to rely on a solid, workable plan. This relied on multiple people not noticing that the old guy with a limp was going back and forth sprinting across along hallway with hundreds of pounds of diamond and keeping perfect time with a clock. Based on everything else, he only had a few hours and could have made maybe 6 trips at most.

Weak heist, weak everything else. Just way too watered down.
