Argh! I hate deus ex machina endings. Specifically, the protagonist is just about to be killed when Oh, surprise! her friend is there to catch the fist right before the final blow. Where'd he come from? Why was he there? Turn out he was a ghost, and since the protagonist is a psychic, there's some justification for that, but it's still a bit forced for my taste.

In all fairness, it is more or less how the persecuted damsel in distress tales have to end. Still, a weakness in the genre is a weakness none-the-less.
