Goemon
From Zanecorpwiki
Cheesy, violent fun. DVD and Blu-Ray
Summary
This is a fun movie that marries on over the top epic past[notes 1] aesthetic of Japanese games with ninja manga, myth, and a bit of actual history. It's a movie of scenes and poses with relatively clock work characters and a plot that doesn't so much flow as drive the movie from scene to scene.
Be prepared for a lot of killing and ubiquitous blood splatter, though nothing really gory. Three and a half stars.
Notes and Details
I love the flagrant mix of Japanese and high-gothic. Again, this is something that will be familiar to anyone that's ever played a recent Japanese epic fantasy game.
It doesn't play a big role, but I love the Christian missionary/Western technology tropes.
Spoiler alert.
The CGI does get ridiculous in a few places. I get what they were going for, but I think a little restraint would have made a few of the scenes stronger. I'm thinking particularly of the final assault on the council and the 50 foot, unassisted vertical leaps.
You can't question the plot too much because that's not what the movie's about, but there were a couple bits that were hard to buy. Why didn't Goemon rescue Seizo immediately after the failed assassination? He could have said something like, "I thought you were dead" or something because as it's played, it seems like he just leaves Seizo to be tortured for no purpose.
Notes
- ↑ Over the top castles, huge armies of knights in fancy army, etc. A re-imagining of the past as epic.
