Gone Baby Gone

iGone Baby Gone/i (DVD, BluRay) is something pretty rare: an entertaining movie with a message that succeeds.

Summary

A lot of people will probably find this movie pretty hard to watch. A kidnapped child is a tough subject. For myself, I quickly realized this was an onion movie in which successive layers of illusion are peeled back until the truth is revealed. While this made the movie easier to watch by putting some distance between the apparent events and the watcher, it also puts distance between the apparent events and the watcher.

That's not a bad thing, just a consequence of the structure of the movie. It's an engaging, entertaining, and thought provoking film. More than anything else, this is a character movie.

Not everyone's going to like this movie. Personally, my only criticism of the film is that a few of the plot points used to drive the story forward are a bit contrived. Nothing killer, but definitely a few times when one thinks, "Wait, why didn't they just do this much simpler alternative?" Actions not totally supported. That sort of thing.

Part of the reason why the plot points are acceptable is that this is very much a character driven movie, and the characters are awesome. Engaging, well done, interesting.
