Good Will Hunting
From Zanecorpwiki
Summary
The film starts off well, and grows stronger but completely falls apart about 2/3rds of the way through. Even if didn't come undone, I'd have trouble understanding the largely unequivocal plaudits for the film--it was far from a perfect film.
As it was, I enjoyed the film, but once it came unglued with 45 minutes left, I lost all my investment in the characters and I realized I didn't care how it ended up. I had no interest in whether it turned out good or bad for the characters.
Details and Notes
Mild spoilers.
The Will character had a hard life, I get it. Of course he's going to be messed up, that's the point of the story really. The problem is that he goes from being quite sensitive and perceptive--as far relations and people go--to being a total asshole. Being afraid to open up is one thing, but I simply saw no justification for the nihilistic assault Will sporadically launches on himself and others.
Not that people can't be fucked up and self destructive. I just didn't buy the character. Will isn't one sided, but he's so completely two sided with no transition or depth between the two that it's still a very shallow character.
