Summary

I remember when this movie came out. It was the action event, special events extravaganza of the year. I think I saw it opening day.

Unfortunately, the movie just doesn't have anything else going for it. The story is contrived, verging on silly and every character is a caricature. The problem with it is scale. They wanted to go big, but they went so big it ceased to make sense. Not that the movie isn't fun in a way.

Aliens surrounding the world, promising destruction. It's interesting, it's inherently tense. But why would advanced aliens that can cross the cosmos need to wait seven hours after taking position to unleash their beams of devastating. It's even a little sad because a minor plot variation could have explained it away: they wanted us for slaves. However, when their intent we revealed to be our utter destruction, it raises the question, why give everyone time to flee?
