Summary

This is one of the first movies I can remember. My Father and I went through a series of 1960's special effects (dynamation!) driven action movies. On re-watching the film, I have to say that it's most appropriate for a young viewer. The plot is about as contrived as can be, with the action moved forward by luck and the gods (who are external to the action) more than by the action of the characters.

It's still a fun movie, and the plot and costuming are beautiful. I'm a big fan of the big set movies as well. I have to say I like it even now, though I probably wouldn't be saying that if it weren't for the sentimental angle.

Details and Notes

Even today, some of the effects are passable, which is a testament to the skill and craftsmanship of the stop motion animators. The action sequences are another story. What is it with old movies and the fight sequences? I swing wide slow... you block. Wait, wait, we circle with our guard down. You swing wide and slow, I block. Half the time they're not even aiming at each other, they just aim at the other guy's sword.

I remember being young, not having seen anything better, and it was exciting enough, but I also remember the first time I saw a Hong Kong film. Same era, but mad action. The Hollywood films just phone it in. More boring than a drunken brawl.

Another thing I don't get is the Greek ruins aesthetic that persists even till today. Do people honestly think that that the Greek ruins of today where built that way?
