Keymaker's Door

Why do we move in fits and starts?

One idea: the smith's keyhole. Reality is like standing outside the master's room. You listen to the master, watch what he does, analyze his craft.

Notes

Original title: Smith's Keyhole. Reference to a simple keyhole made by a smith. The apprentice sits outside until they understand enough about the lock to pick it. Nice visual, but the metaphor wasn't as tight since the smith would be doing many more things (horse shoes, business negotians).
