Literary Production

Why don't we ever produce books? I love the idea of hiring the right specialists to contribute to a work under a coordinated vision.

I'm primarily thinking of non-fiction books. Like developer references, how-tos, and histories. It could be applied to other works as well, but that's not my first thought.

For some, this is antitchetical to what it means to be an author, but I don't see the problem. I have no issue with single-source works, but why limit it? A play has an author, but is interpreted by a director and actors and a producer in every production. What's the difference in applying that same process to the script itself?

In the realm of non-fiction, it seems even better. Someone to do layout, someone to fact check, someone to review for accessibility, all coordinated under a single vision would make an excellent work.

Now, there are books where multiple authors are invited to contribute a chapter, and that's not what I'm talking about at all. In theory, you have the experts concentrating on a subject, but I specifically am talking about a unified work with a single voice, not a collection of essays around a topic.
