Mary Would Have Got an Abortion

Via Chuck Norris Says Obama Wants Mary to Abort Jesus:

What would have happened if Mother Mary had been [...] provided the federal funds (via Obamacare) and facilities (via Planned Parenthood, etc.) to avoid the ridicule, ostracizing, persecution and possible stoning because of her out-of-wedlock pregnancy? Imagine all the great souls who could have been erased from history and the influence of mankind if their parents had been as progressive as Washington's wise men and women!

In his article on the subject, Chris Kelly focuses on the fact that Chuck views the Mother of God as just another air-head slut would glady get an abortion so long as it was more convenient than not. The implication being that every women who was not badgered and forced into carrying a child to term would choose to abort, as women are "obviously" nothing more than self-centered half-people with no moral convictions of their own.

What's worse than Norris's misogyny and backwards understanding of his own religion, is that he's actually the one on the slippery slope. If you can defend limiting abortion by pointing out all the great people that may have not been born, you can just as easily--and in fact must--argue requiring abortion because of all the terrible people that you may keep from being born.

Norris has stepped right into a big pile of eugenic shit here. He's talking specifically and explicitly about population control. The fact that he's arguing for some kind of enforced birthing is irrelevant... it's still eugenics. By definition, eugenics is when society determines who will be born or not. Deciding that everyone will be born is just one extreme within the eugenic camp.

The other thing that gets me about this argument, is that I don't see any difference (in the argument) between requiring women to have a baby and requiring women to get pregnant. In fact, if we're honest about it, that's what those like Norris really want to get back to. It is precisely the idea that women are property whose only function is to turn out babies. Can't get pregnant? Defective! Exchange.

This is the role of women in the history of Medieval Europe. The duty was to be pregnant and conceive. Oh yeah, and the more boys the better to. In this idea that "people need to be born," Norris (et. al) is not arguing against abortion, he's arguing for maximizing births. That's a stance that requires women to be completely subservient.

This is what the pro-birthers miss about pro-choice. It's not the choice to abort or not, it's about choice itself. Pro-choice doesn't embrace abortion, it embraces choice.
