Move Library from Windows to iTunes

Based on this.

The challenge is you need to update the location of the music files, but iTunes ignores the XML as long as the 'Library' file is around. Idea: kill the Library file and force iTunes to load from the XML. Note: you can't delete the Library because iTunes will ignore the XML and re-initialize. You must 'corrupt' the Library to force a rebuild.

  1. copy the 'iTunes' folder, default in your document folder, 'Music' to /Users/yourname/Music; keep the original copy till you're done--it's easy to mess up!
  2. open 'iTunes Library.itl', delete everything (use emacs or some other raw text editor, TextEdit will not work)
  3. open the 'iTunes Music Library.xml' file and make the change; iTunes uses URLs, useful to verify location using Firefox
  4. open iTunes, it should say something about importing from XML and a damaged file (yay!)

If you have problems, keep deleting the ITL and messing with the XML. iTunes is very picky and will blow away entries it doesn't like.
