Summary

A sweet little film, Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist is a teen movie that blends the safe predictability of the genre with a good dose of realism. A lot of reviews say it's Juno without the heart, but I think that misses the point. Juno is a quirky film about exceptional kids. Nick and Norah aren't exceptional and this isn't a quirky film.

This is a teen movie. An exceptional teen movie in my opinion. It does what it does within the genre, despite the predictability,

Details and Notes

Does anyone really have nights like this? Not really. But none of the events seem particularly unbelievable and teen movies are, in part, about compressing time. The movie feels genuine though. This is as much a testament to the production and acting as it speaks to the success of the intent.

I was worried that the movie would overplay the music angle, but it didn't. In both the soundtrack and the action, music was the backdrop but never became distracting.

The one major criticism I have is with the second test of Nick and Norah's new infatuation. They'd both made their decision in the first test, and I'm not sure what the second one was about. It came off as if they still might go back to their previous relationship. That seems so improbable that it could have been a bungled presentation, a time stretch that read wrong? Either way, it was a serious What? moment.
