Loved it. DVD and Blu-Ray

Summary

I just flat out enjoyed this film. It's a gritty kind of near fantasy that blends the mundane and the supernatural. The crossover is multi-level and smart. The story involves fate, but is not "driven by fate". Instead, it moves in fits and starts, driven by mistakes and sacrifice, heroism and cowardice. There are no heroes and few villains. The characters are textured.

This is one of those movies that works as a piece. I find it hard to break down the cinematography, writing, direction, and acting, and that's a very good thing. This is a tricky film, and if there were a weak link, it could very easily cause everything to unravel. Instead, each strand reinforces the others.

Details and Notes

I have a sneaking suspicion that the film wouldn't have worked quite as well for me had it been in English and set in the US. The Russian language and backdrop gave it that next level of "otherworldness".
