Not Another Teen Movie
From Zanecorpwiki
Summary
This is not only the most successful genre parody movie, but a good movie in it's own right. To be fair, I've only ever seen parts and previews of other parody movies, but I still feel very confident that my belief in this regard is true.
To be even fairer, you probably have to be at least a little into teen movies to like this film... but not so much that a movie making fun of them makes you angry. But if that's true, you're a douche so screw it.
In short, if you're not a douche and think Pretty in Pink is pretty tight (but also a little silly), you'll think this movie is worth your time. On the other hand, it's understandable why most people don't like the movie. It is what it is: a silly parody of silly films aimed at a very narrow audience. (Case in point: if you don't think teen movies are silly emand/em good, you're outside the target.)
Details and Notes
What makes the movie work where other genre parodies fail is the subject matter. Teen movies are silly to begin with, so a parody is still in the spirit of. Other genre parody films focus on stringing together over the top scenes, so it's hard not be overblown. You don't have to try too hard to make fun of teen movies, so your parody can have a touch and deftness that's hard to achieve with other subject matter.
Another advantage is the similarities of the teen movies. You can string together your references and still come out with a cohesive product that doesn't feel strung together.
Having said this, this isn't a deft and subtle film. The comedy is very direct, and while you a teen movie fan will appreciate the references and jokes, there aren't any surprises. It's well done with quite a few very funny moments, but like I said, there's qualifications on whose going to like this movie.
On the other (other) hand, that's what this movie is about. It's for teen movie lovers. I don't think Epic Movie was written by lovers of epic movies, but this movie feels like it was written by people who love teen movies.
