Organic Working

I like aspects of co-working, and the idea itself seems kind of exciting, but so far my reaction to every implementation I've seen has been kind of "blah". The most interesting arrangement I've seen so far has been a simple ad-hoc aggregation of interesting people, but there is no company or co-working arrangement, they just all decided to sub-lease at the same place.

Maybe the problem I have with co-working[notes 1] is the stability of the culture. It seems to chaotic... like great things may happen but I feel strongly that most of the time it would just be blah. "Networking" isn't just about running into interesting people, but about establishing long term relationships. That can happen so many ways, and co-working is probably just the thing for some people, but I want a more "intentional" culture.

Thoughts:

  • the community has a say in the resources
  • at the same time, resources are distributed by a relatively pure market
  • specifically, we support perfectly valid, but often lacking expressions
    • to protect a certain culture, members may support bids for resources; e.g., there are 10 spaces leased in 6 month chunks (by community by-laws) which are bid on bi-annually, a less successful but very interesting member can only afford a bid of $200/month and a new entrant is bidding $300. But 5 of the members who perceive value in keeping the current member around have committed up to $50/month each to make that happen. These commitments are used to increase the current member's bid to $325, and he stays. He pays $200 and each of the supporting bidders pays $25/month
    • the profit feeds back into the community; the real estate owner gets cost + 5% + 15% of the remaining profit. The balance is distributed among members according to shares or some equivalent
