Part Tagging

Tag parts with report stickers. Large organizations will track serial numbers of incoming parts and tie tickets to them.ref group=notesAny system handling what is described here could easily take cognizance of serial numbers and use as an alternate key. As a matter of company policy, if serial numbers have to be used all the time, then the non-selial number tagging approach described here could be turned off./ref This doesn't work for small companies and is probably not the most efficient think even for large companies.

The problem is the time it takes to track the serial number and the item itself. It's a pain to get the serial number itself. This is true for both initial entry and later reference. Serial numbers are not often in convenient places. It may, for instance, be necessary to disassemble a system in order to find the serial number of a given component.

Instead, tag the part. Write a reference number on the tag. This is quicker and the tag can be conveniently placed. Most importantly, it lets the operator know that there's something important to be known about the part. Like maybe it doesn't work, or it's finicky, or may have a problem but needs further evaluation.

Now people (including whoever wrote the ticket) can easily know there's something important to know about a part and be able to find what it is. Notice that tagging is compatible and useful with a serial number (or otherwise) inventory system. Nice synergy there.

Also, can sell a roll/sheet of stickers ready made for tagging. Maybe stickers + luggage style tags. Customize to customer? E.g., with URL of the ticket database?

Particularly interesting in conjunction with SMB IT
