Politics is Theater
From Zanecorpwiki
I've noticed something: people that watch politics and do more than just cheer for one side (or themselves) treat it as a kind of show. I'm thinking mostly journalists, but also the sophisticated talking heads. Sometimes objective, sometimes they have their own policy and politics, but the kind of people that will give credit where credit is due and look beyond narrow partisan messages.
I really think this is the way to go. The sad fact is that our problems are structural. They can absolutely be fixed, but politicians will never fix them. Politicians will never fix any problem until it must be fixed. Until then, you just get a lot of sloshing back and forth that doesn't make much difference. Democrats will spend too much, Republicans will tax too little and either way the deficit grows and we all get screwed.
It's not all doom and gloom, though, because it matters less than most people think. Policy that is. Good policy is undermined to make it less good, but bad policy is undermined to make it less bad. We end up with a bunch of grey shit.
