Very decent Western that falls short of a classic.

Summary

Tough guy western with good acting, excellent scenery, decent story, top notch production, but ultimately a very safe film.

Details and Notes

Spoilers ahead.

Tough guys with a heart, this movie seems too finely calculated to please to be really good. There's not much honesty in the story. Even the "and then they gave up the money for love" angle is completely ruined by the complete lack of remark on the 100 or so Mexicans the leads unnecessarily killed before figuring out what decent guys they really were. I don't think it was intentionally racist, and in some ways, it goes out of it's way to prove it isn't. One of the main characters is black, and the two lead characters both fought alongside Mexican rebels. I get the feeling that racism was a habit the society was trying to kick; making a show of getting with the program, but still clearly blind to overt and much larger problems of the disease.
