Summary

I went in to this movie expecting something okay with lots of problems. I ended up finding very few problems and liking it a lot.

It was clear that the movie was taking the Bond brand in a different direction and that was my main concern. Whereas Pierce Brosnan was very much a continuation--though evolution--of the Bond brand, the Daniel Craig is very much a break. The new character recalls the Bond of old, but that's about it.

But it works. The movie is certainly a little grittier than the classics. It moves like a Guy Ritchie project, but maybe that's the point. The action aesthetic has evolved, and the Bond brand has changed with the times.

Details and Notes

The only thing I found a little disappointing where the quick cut action scenes. I did like them, there were some of the most compressed, slick scenes in that style I've yet scene. Beautifully edited.

But it entirely lacks the classic craft. Anyone can be a sub-second stuntman. Anyone can throw one punch at a time. The new stuff is great, but it get's tiresome. I don't really get why things go in such boring cycles. This is the season of quick cuts. I'd just prefer things a little more varied.

The villain update was the most impressive. All the genius, grand plan without the fruity pretensions. Good stuff.

There were in fact many fantastic new movements in the old themes.
