Red Beard
From Zanecorpwiki
An excellent film, but more interesting than entertaining. DVD
Summary
This is certainly a good movie. Well written, well directed, beautifully filmed. It's a very mature and deep work. At the same time, I just didn't find it as entertaining as I felt it should be. It's a three hour film with lots going on. I wouldn't say "it's all over the place"; in fact, it was well paced and very coherent, but I think the story would have fit much better into a 6 part mini-series with 60 minute episodes. This may be driven by my own aesthetic and modern attention spans, but there it is.
Details and Notes
Spoiler alert.
The story of the little girl and the boy are really the best bits. Their story and how it effects wayward doctor's commitment to clinic is both touching and really deftly told. Not that the other parts of the story are bad or conflict... but... well, it was probably in my own viewing. I really want to see this film, but it's hard for me to give 3 hours straight, full attention to a movie. So I didn't. Which is to say, I usually try to consider a film from many perspectives, and in this case, I don't think I watched the film in the way it needed to be watched. It's a demanding film.
