  1. Number one for many reasons: don't route too much at once. It can burn out the router and wear the bit. In my experience, a 1 3/4 HP router with a good quality bit is good for a 1/6 square inch cutting profile. However, you don't want to go too deep in one pass even if it the profile is less. If you can, set everything but the depth (since that's the easiest to adjust and keep everything square). Don't shy away from multiple passes.
