One of my favorite films, but a film you need time for. DVD

Summary

I'll admit: much of the movies I review were watched while multi-tasking. This, however, is a movie to watch. The story, the filming, the direction, the acting all demand both your attention and respect. I found this to be one of the most engaging films I've ever watched, which makes the tragic ending simply heart wrenching in it's effect.

Aside from the quality, the story is just pitch perfect and utterly timeless. The images are from another time and place, but I almost felt as if I was looking through a window rather a recording, so immediate and human is the nature of the film.

Details and Notes

Part of the feeling of immediacy of the film stems from the fact that the film occurs in a handful of acts, but each act is presented as contiguous time. The film covers no more than a two or three days[notes 1]

Notes

  1. Maybe even just a day. I'd have to re-watch with an eye towards the narrative clock.
