A really fun zombie apocalypse.

Summary

I'm reviewing the movie quite awhile after seeing it, but it's a pretty important movie, IMO, so it needs a review. (I wonder if this might be one of the lost entries.) So bear with me until I get around to watching this again.

It's not often that you think of zombie apocalypse movies as being simultaneously poignant, clever, and funny, but that pretty much sums up The Signal. It's genre defying, for sure. It's a clearly a zombie movie. "A more subtle, more creative version of Idiocracy would be a fair description as well.

The basic plot is a signal, broadcast over the TV turns those that hear it into mindless zombies. They lose their inhibitions and higher reasoning functions. The epidemic effects everyone differently, though. Some people are clearly deranged, while you can't be sure if others have been effected at all. There's as much care behind the story as the most introverted indie film, which is not something you can say about any other zombie movie I've ever seen. Yet, it's no art house film. I mean, I don't think it'll ever see Hollywood distribution, but you don't have to be a RTF major to like this movie. It's just plain funny and engaging on it's own. There's a bit of gore, but unless that's a deal breaker, you don't really have to be into zombie movies at all to enjoy this one.
