Overview

TCP/IP are the two protocols that define the Internet. IP is simply an addressing system that assigns a number to a network device in much the same way your phone is assigned a phone number. TCP defines how data is transmitted between to such IP addresses.

In it's most basic form, the Internet is simply a collection of devices drawing from the same pool of IP addresses and interconnected through TCP. It is possible, and not uncommon to create a TCP/IP networks that are not connected to the Internet, but everything on the Internet is a part of the TCP/IP network.ref group=notesA device may not talk TCP/IP directly--i.e., it may connect through a proxy--but to be on the Internet a device must be reachable through TCP/IP/ref
