Tron
From Zanecorpwiki
Summary
I with I could remember what it was like when I first saw Tron--I was pretty young. Maybe I'll interview some people that saw it in their 20s. For me, it's the kitsch that makes this movie work and I wonder what made it so classic in the original. Not that there's not some great stuff going on. The suits and grey-effect are pretty sweet, and the 1980's 3D backgrounds have their charm.
Decent charm, acceptable plot, competent acting, but as a package it just doesn't quite make it for me. Certainly worth a look for anyone interested in historical nerd culture though.
Details and Notes
Spoilers.
First off, Flynn's pad above the video arcade is pretty sweet.
Once one accepts the basic premise of the film that programs run around in your computer living more or less like humans, most of the elements of the film work okay. The IO tower is clever, the power spring seems contrived. The data disk is clever, jumping into the beam is contrived.
Watching as a 30 year old adult in 2008, the film's biggest problem is that this is a Disney film aimed at 13 year olds from 1982. As such, it's a little sloppy in places. It's a a bit slow, more of an adventure film than an action movie. Perfect for the sense and sensibilities of young teens and pre-teens. A little boring for me.
