Tropic Thunder

If you love absurdity and Apocalypse Now then you'll love Tropic Thunder. Actually, the movie isn't so much based on Apocalypse Now (though there are some excellent homage scenes) as it is based on the making of Apocalypse Now.

Robert Downey Jr.'s character and his portrayal are inspired. Jack Black turns in his best performance yet. The rest of the stars (it's a five man show) are solid, but not exceptional. The supporting cast really shines as well. Tom Cruise does a great job playing a crazy ego maniac (go figure), Nick Nolte is a bit of a personal treat, and so is Danny McBride as the explosives technician. I don't know who he is, but Les's assistant is nice too.

While Stiller's performance isn't stellar, I have to give him credit for the screenplay and producing a really funny movie. His panda scene and Brando homages are two of the best single bits of the movie.

There's really no place where the movie falls flat and it's all in all a very solid comedy that's consistently entertaining.
