Twenty Five Percent of Segway Users Hospitalized
From Zanecorpwiki
Segway Injury Study: number of injuries increasing, 25% admitted to hospital
How would you read this? I think the only way you can read it is to understand that 25% of Segway users are hospitalized. The announcer eventually explains that 25% of Segway users who went to the emergency room following an incident were hospitalized... which as as vacuous a statistic as I've ever heard. While it's true that only 13% of all emergency room visits result in hospitalization[1], this bit of context is entirely absent from the scare number. And in any case, I'd think you have to compare Segways to bicycles or scooters to see if Segways are particularly dangerous, as well as control for individuals who go to the emergency room for standard care because they lack health insurance (very few of whom I would think own Segways).
And regardless, none of this tells us anything about the accident rate for Segways, which is what the story purports to be about.
