Using MediaWiki as a Knowledge Base

Categories are the key to creating an effective knowledge base with MediaWiki. Categories can have sub-categories (the cookbook and reference categories do). Generally, if there are sub-categories, it's better that the category contain only categories and not contain pages/articles as well. Any top level information can be discussed on the category page.

Categories are created dynamically when a page--which may be a regular article page or a category page--declares that it is part of a category. One way of looking of looking at it is this: by categorizing an article pages, you include it a book. Books (via the category page) may be included in sets. (And if there's sufficient stuff, sets can be included in super sets, etc.)

For instance, this article is categorized as part of the Category:MediaWiki Cookbook:MediaWiki Cookbook and Knowledge Base (with MediaWiki) Cookbook. Many articles have a single categorization, this one simply happens to be included in two collections/books. Those collections are part of the Technology Cookbook collection, which is a top level collection referenced from the main page.

Categories have their own page in the wiki, and we use this to note requirements, assumptions, external references, etc.

For more specific techniques on how to create and manage a knowledge base with MediaWiki, see the Category:Knowledge Base (with MediaWiki) Cookbook

Take a look at the page source, and browse around this knowledge base to get an idea of how this looks in practice.
